Chronic shoulder stiffness and neck pain are common symptoms experienced by many, particularly those engaged in desk work or frequent smartphone use. It’s no surprise that many have sought relief through chiropractic care, massage, or other therapies. Over-the-counter ointments and medications for shoulder stiffness are also widely available, making this condition so prevalent that it could be considered a “national ailment.” At my clinic, shoulder stiffness consistently ranks among the top three most common concerns brought to us.
While shoulder stiffness often results from prolonged muscle tension or repetitive strain, it can sometimes signal a more serious underlying condition. If the stiffness has persisted for years or occurs after work but subsides with rest, it’s likely due to muscular tension. However, if the pain arises suddenly without any notable changes in daily habits or becomes increasingly severe, it’s important to exercise caution.
Signs of Potentially Serious Conditions
1. Vertebral Artery Dissection
The vertebral artery runs from the heart, passing through the cervical spine, and directly supplies blood to the brain. While this artery is highly flexible and elastic, individuals with underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, or diabetes should remain vigilant.
Pain associated with this condition often manifests as intense discomfort from the neck to the back, differing significantly from typical shoulder stiffness. In severe cases, most people will visit a hospital immediately. However, mild cases may present as symptoms resembling shoulder stiffness.
At Spine Chiropractic, I perform thorough initial consultations and examinations, including orthopedic manual assessments. If vertebral artery issues are suspected, I refrain from cervical adjustments and recommend seeking immediate medical attention.
2. Lung Cancer
While chiropractic care does not diagnose or treat cancer, lung cancer involving the upper lobe can occasionally cause severe shoulder pain. Additionally, if a tumor compresses the brachial plexus (a nerve cluster passing through the neck and beneath the clavicle), it may lead to arm numbness.
For conditions like Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), which involves arm numbness and often responds well to chiropractic treatment, it’s crucial to first rule out any underlying issues. At Spine Chiropractic, I recommend that anyone experiencing arm numbness have the affected arm thoroughly evaluated at a hospital as the first approach. If no abnormalities are found, chiropractic care can be highly effective in addressing TOS-related symptoms.
3. Gallstones
Though rare, gallstones can sometimes cause referred pain in the right shoulder due to visceral-related discomfort.
4. Myocardial Infarction or Angina
These conditions can manifest as shoulder or neck pain that pulsates even during rest. While they are not directly treatable with chiropractic care, these symptoms are worth noting.
5. Spinal Cord Tumors
Though uncommon, spinal cord tumors may also cause symptoms resembling shoulder pain. At Spine Chiropractic, I emphasize the importance of detailed initial consultations. If any findings raise concerns, I recommend visiting a medical institution for further evaluation.
